Another way to say Eye <3 You

It took me a long, long time to come to grips with the fact that men will go out and pierce a perfectly good penis, but here's a new one for you body modification devotees - permanent eyeball jewelry. Developed at the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery in 2002, the thin "specially designed material" is implanted into the interpalpebral conjunctiva (that's the white part). It's said this decoration doesn't affect your vision or eye in any way. You can't even tell it's there except for the looks of horror on the faces of people who at first think you have some kind of tumor, and are then told you did this to yourself voluntarily. Not that I have an opinion. Eyes are the window to the soul, and I'm not sure it's a good advertisement to hang a sign in it that pretty much says, "out to lunch", but I digress. The material can be molded into all kinds of shapes, and it's a nice touch, I think, to have real blood-shot-eye veins growing over the implanted heart in this woman's eye. I'm curious as to how this implant will be treated by the eye in say, 5 or 15 years? 30 years? Are they removable? Am I the only one who squirms when I think of getting your eyeball cut into? I'm lucky I get my contacts in. The Institute claims they have done a lot of these operations, but I could only find 3 photos. I'm not sure there's much of a chance of finding someone who has had this done to ask them about it, but if so, give me a yell.
