I hope these are just camouflage

Dave Blackledge spent the last 12 months combing a bird reserve in northwest England for rare and unusual spiders. One of them is pictured here - named Salticus scenicus - and he just cracked me up when I saw him. What a way to go through life. They're said to be nice, friendly little guys and will feed right out of your hand. Perhaps they're just very smart and aren't going to pass up a free meal.

Two more spiders discovered are Pirata piraticus, which can walk on water, and Amaurobius similes, who's silk is a lovely bluish color. (6/02)
